How it works

Draw it: grab your iPad or iPhone and draw the word you get on the screen. You can use your finger or Apple Pencil.

See it: your drawing appears on the TV in real time. Your team watches your drawing take shape and they try to…

Guess it: shout out best guesses until someone gets it right.

Repeat: pass the device to the next player and keep going until everyone has had a turn.

A full game runs about 30 minutes, with six players getting five words per turn for two turns each.

    Used to play this a lot with friends back in the iPad 2/3 days. Eventually stopped using those iPads and forgot about it. I recently purchased a new iPad Pro 12.9" after years of not using an iPad. The other day, I decided to check out what I had on my iPad 3, and I found this game! Immediately went to download it on my new iPad. Looks like it works with Apple TV natively now (instead of AirPlay). It also works with Apple Pencil, which is a huge plus. Can't wait to play this again and relive some memories!

    Tried this for the first time this week with the family… It was an absolute hoot to see our terrible drawings up on the TV and pass around the iPad trying to help our team guess what we are drawing. Was very interactive with the kids and really all ages. The connection between the iPad and the Apple TV app was seamless and solid, no issues. Highly recommend. We used an iPad with an Apple Pencil in our situation and it worked awesome.

What you need

Just one iPhone or iPad and a TV. It's pass-and-play, so nobody else needs to download anything.

  • To draw: an iPhone or iPad running iOS 18 or later.
  • On the TV: the SketchParty TV app on Apple TV 4K or Apple TV 4 with tvOS 18 or later. No Apple TV? AirPlay Mirroring to an AirPlay 2 compatible TV works, or you can plug in with an HDMI adapter.

You'll also need electricity, comfortable seating, Wi-Fi… Oh, and snacks.
And friends and family.

Recently updated

Version 5.5.0 (iPhone and iPad) and Apple TV app 3.1.0 are updated for iOS 27 and tvOS 27. The first AirPlay connection no longer comes up blank. Dark Mode is off for now while the design is being reworked.

The story behind SketchParty TV

I'm Matt Braun, and I made SketchParty TV because I wanted to make a truly social game and bring back game night. Everybody in the same room, laughing and having a good time, for holiday parties, game night, or just because.

I was fortunate enough to be at Steve Jobs's last WWDC keynote, when Apple introduced AirPlay Mirroring. Sitting in that audience, I had an epiphany: AirPlay would be perfect for a party game.

So I built SketchParty TV.

It's a Pictionary-style drawing game for 2 to 16 people on two teams. Whoever's up draws on an iPhone or iPad while their team shouts their guesses. Then they pass the device to the next player. Nobody else has to download anything, or even take their phone out. The TV side runs on the native tvOS Apple TV app, or you can use AirPlay or an HDMI adapter.

It's just $5.99 on the App Store (less than a lot of movie rentals), and that one purchase gets you the iPhone/iPad app and the Apple TV app. I've been updating it since 2012, so it remains one of the best value apps on the App Store.

Apple surprised me when they showed SketchParty TV in a WWDC keynote, talking about it on stage alongside huge name titles like Minecraft Dungeons and NBA2K. It's also been in Apple's "New Games We Love," "Greatest Party Games," and "Essential Family Games" collections. Teachers use it to review vocab words, and it turns up at office parties too. There's even a special version for tradeshows and events.
